In this work, we found unexpectedly large foveal magnification in a phylogenetically old brain structure in the brainstem. The work represented a significant departure from past discourse about visual-motor organization in the brain, which generally suggested that foveal visual scene analysis is primarily done by cortical areas, whereas the shifting of gaze away from the fovea is a function of the SC.
